Amara is a popular variation within the minor modes, consistently omitting one note. This is the sixth note in the scale, also known as the minor sixth.
By omitting this tone, a more open and peaceful sound is created. It is very similar to pentatonic, although for that, one more tone would need to be omitted (the minor second).
Amara is an ideal tuning for free and intuitive playing. By omitting that one note, the minor sixth, a beautifully open tuning is created, comprising mainly notes that sound good together.
Even with free play, the chance of a beautiful and harmonious match is therefore very high. This makes this structure a friendly and inviting mood, which invites a grateful way of exploring your handpan.
What makes E Amara unique is the large number of bass tones. Because of the slightly higher root tone (E), there is room for extra low on the handpan. So at the bottom of this handpan are two extra bass tones. Two tones that go even lower than the E (C and D). These additions in the low end give extra harmonic possibilities. It makes this tuning musical and narrative.
Also, the higher fundamental (E) gives room for extra treble notes. This tuning does not have the standard number of 9 or 10 tones at the top, but as many as 13 tones. These extra high notes allow you to explore even more in terms of melody.
Another name for Amara is Celtic Minor. These two designations represent exactly the same structure
Stainless steel
Stainless steel is characterised by medium to above-average reverberation, and a nice clear sound. The mid-high fresh sound is something that comes out clearly with the sound of stainless steel. It has a bit less (top) high and a bit less low than Ember Steel, but moves a bit more into the (high) middle.
This makes stainless steel a fine and fresh sound, which today forms a nice middle ground within all the different sounds in terms of materials. It has slightly less reverb than Ember Steel, but clearly more reverb than nitrided steel.
