The Astronaut mood is one of a kind. This mood was made famous by Kabeçao, who first exhibited it with his beautiful composition on the Chinese wall. This composition, called Astronaut, became so famous that this mood was named after it.
The Astronaut was the first tuning with an F2 as the bass tone. This was considerably lower than any other bass tone available at the time. Nowadays, there is a fairly popular tuning very similar to the F2 Astronaut: the F2 Pygmy.
The F2 Pygmy is almost identical to the F2 Astronaut, with one difference: the scale around the ding starts even lower on the F2 Astronaut. So the F2 Astronaut does not start on an F3 after the ding, but on a C3. This adds even more layer and warmth to the tuning than on the F2 Pygmy.
This does mean that the range also ends one tone earlier at the top of your handpan. So you have 1 higher tone less than with the F2 Pygmy. Fortunately, this is more than made up for with no less than six more treble notes at the bottom of this handpan.
Besides these 6 high bottom tones, the Astronaut also has 2 low bottom tones, which fill the gap between the C3 and the F3. So you have an extra low Db3 and Eb3 on the bottom. So a huge range, with infinite possibilities!
Stainless steel
Stainless steel is characterised by medium to above-average reverberation, and a nice clear sound. The mid-high fresh sound is something that comes out clearly with the sound of stainless steel. It has a bit less (top) high and a bit less low than Ember Steel, but moves a bit more into the (high) middle.
This makes stainless steel a fine and fresh sound, which today forms a nice middle ground within all the different sounds in terms of materials. It has slightly less reverb than Ember Steel, but clearly more reverb than nitrided steel.
