Low Pygmy is a minor tuning, skipping the minor seventh and fourth. So you have five of the seven notes in the minor series. A slightly different tone choice from regular Pygmy.
What makes Low Pygmy truly unique is that there is no gap between the ‘ding’ and the next note. Whilst in almost every other tuning the ‘ding’ skips a few notes in the sequence, in Low Pygmy the ‘ding’ is, as it were, more of an integral part of the other notes.
So Low Pygmy isn’t so much a tuning with a bass note (the central middle note, the ‘ding’) and a melody built around it. With this tuning, it forms a single whole, in which the ‘ding’ is part of the melody, and the focus as a whole is more on the melody than on the bass.
The name ‘Low Pygmy’ might lead you to assume it’s a low tuning. Yet the Low Pygmy is actually tuned slightly higher. This contributes to the beautiful, melodious and sparkling character of this tuning. It’s definitely a unique tuning amongst handpan tunings!
Nitrided Steel
Nitrated steel is characterised by a short to medium sustain, and a warm and deep sound. It has fewer high frequencies than stainless steel or ember steel, giving the sound of nitrated steel a more rounded character.
This round character, combined with a short to medium sustain, makes nitrided steel a versatile material, capable of producing both meditative and percussive sounds.
